Just thought I’d share a couple of reads with you all that I found interesting in the Sunday morning papers.
The Detroit Free Press’ Georgea Kovanis wrote a great profile on a young Detroiter (this kid is my age) who is fighting the odds. I’m a sucker for stories like this, not to mention it’s also very well written and emotionally intriguing.
“It is a story about growing up in Detroit. It’s about moving away from home. It’s about world-weary desperation and youthful exuberance. This is a story about trying to escape the past because you want more for yourself than the adults who raised you.”

Nolan Finley of the Detroit News put out a provoking column discussing the three I’s that are to be blamed on Detroit’s decline: ignorance, illegitimacy and isolation.
“Detroit used to make cars. Now it makes poor people. The city pumps out poverty on a three-shift, seven-day cycle.”
“Ignorance is by far the main ingredient. Citizens came to Mayor Bing’s town halls on right-sizing last week shouting for jobs. Let’s get real.”
