As the TIME: Assignment Detroit blog slowly winds down, one of their bloggers Kristy Erdodi talks about why she moved away from Detroit and Michigan after graduating college, only to find herself come back a few years later.

She also discusses why she thought Chicago—with it’s sexy, big-city appeal—was the only place for opportunities in journalism and how she soon discovered that all the opportunity and sex-appeal she was looking forward was right here in Detroit the whole time.

Previously, I thought only those sexy, faraway cities could offer journalistic opportunities. Detroit gave me the best experience of my life.
