JDETROIT TURNS ONE!

Yes, folks, yes. It has been a year since that first post heard ‘round the world shot out of a cold, placid dorm room on the south-side of the Michigan State University campus.

And, oh what a year it has been.

Does anyone really care though?  I’ll bet a pretty solid no, but nonetheless I’ll keep truckin’ along in hopes that somebody somewhere out there finds something about this blog useful, or at least half-way entertaining.

I jumped the gun a little, back in the beginning of January, in anticipation of the impending anniversary with a post reflecting on why I began the blog and I what I had learned so far.

The biggest revelation I conjured up? I still have a lot to learn.

The good news though is that in the one year since jdetroit.com began I have come to realize that there are other people out there, young, old, left, right, crazy, normal people that are putting their best foot forward to get the word out about the D as well.  And who can argue with that?!?

Detroit Lives

All of these blogs have one thing in common.  I could imagine they all began in similar fashion, with one person, one day sitting down, with one idea racing through their mind: how to make Detroit better.

While the idea may by simple, the execution is bit more tedious, which is why this blog is only just scraping the surface.

My personal goal this coming summer is to get involved, to get my hands dirty and take the next step to making a difference in the city. From the Detroit Works Project, to the Next Detroit Neighborhood Initiative, and the Detroit Blight Busters, there’s an outlet for everyone to lend a hand.

Changing the perception of Detroit is one thing, changing the reality is quite another, and it is undoubtedly no small, Sunday afternoon task.

The journey has only just begun though. Here’s to another year of hopeful discovery and enlightenment. Won’t you join me?

But first, a look back at some of the most memorable posts of the past year:
