Earlier this week, almost 300 Detroit Public School graduating seniors were honored at COBO Hall during the Excellence Awards. In order to have attended the ceremony the student had to have maintained at least a 3.5 GPA throughout his or her high school career, 16 of those students had all A’s.
The ceremony also recognized eight students whom were award the Gates Millennium Scholarship established by none other than Bill Gates himself.
It is definitely worth noting that, in a city and school district clouded in scandal and corruption for far too long, there are still dedicated students and faculty members that are not only fighting against the odds but thriving and ultimately going on to make something of themselves. I only hope these gifted and talented minds eventually make their way back to Detroit. God knows we need as many bright and dedicated young individuals as we can get.
