A thought on Social Media’s impact on Detroit

Sorry for the lack of posts as of recently.  This past month I’ve been kept pretty busy with my internship and now because of that I’m finding that most of my time is spent with Social Media on the brain.  I’ve learned a lot, just since May, about the impact online digital media is having on our society and how it really is changing the way we’re doing business and interacting with others.  Much to my chagrin, at least at first, I came to realize that social media wasn’t just a fad and wasn’t just for narcissistic stalkers on the web.

No, instead I’ve come to embrace it and appreciate it’s potential in this new era of technology and social interaction.  Lately I’ve been thinking about the impact social media has had on the city of Detroit just within the past few years.  It doesn’t take much effort to browse around online and discover that there exists an entire online community of dedicated bloggers, tweeters and entrepreneurs that are absolutely in love with this city.   And, not only are they in love, they are bound-and-determined to get the word out to as many people as possible as to how to great Detroit really is.

Positive Detroit is only a click away and finding other individuals to network with who have the same passion as I do for rebuilding the city are no further than their finding latest tweet.  With the internet us Detroiter’s, the people who live, eat, breath and see the city everyday for what it really is, now have the opportunity to tell others around the world about Detroit’s untold story all while avoiding the “old media” on television and elsewhere with all of it’s preconceived notions and inaccurate assumptions.

Social media is no doubt an extremely powerful tool and its quickly forming the foundation that is made up of countless individuals, all with a similar goal and vision in mind.  That’s the power of social media: to bring together people and their city and that is a truly remarkable thing.
