Movement Returns to Detroit

Picture by Marvin Shaouni of Groove

In it’s 12th year, The Movement Electronic Music Festival kicks off in Hart Plaza today and runs through Memorial Day.  Headlining acts include Felix de Housecat today, Carl Craig tomorrow on Sunday and Fatboy Slim on Monday along with more than 100 other acts throughout the weekend.  Check out the full schedule here.

After hitting a few financial and personal snags at the beginning — though remarkable how a ship so large could right itself when doubters said it could not be done — the event first dubbed the Detroit Electronic Music Festival then Fuse-In then the current Movement survived its growing pains and has become one the world’s most impressive dance music spectacles. Over 100,000 people are expected to flood into downtown’s Hart Plaza over the weekend. Dozens of off-site parties await the insatiable who can never get enough beats.

Advance one-day passes are $35 ($40 at the door), advance weekend passes are $70. Get your tickets here.

Check out full coverage over at Model D and the Freep, or head downtown this weekend and check it out yourself. I know I’ll be heading down at some point this weekend.

Upmarket Living in the D

Model D’s Tom Hendrikson put together a great video on the buzz surrounding the upswing in buying and selling of residential properties in Detroit and more specifically in Midtown and the Woodward Corridor.  Too bad I’m not in the market….

There is a clear sense of “it” happening in the Woodward Corridor: “it” being a combination of corporate investment, community engagement, increasing lifestyle choices, and people looking for places to work and live.

Check out the video below.

Model D highlights the last 5 years of Detroit development

For those who love Detroit, and don’t know what Model D is, you’re doing yourself a big disservice. In short, Model D has been covering everything positive developing in the D for the past five years or so and has done a fantastic job. (BTW a link to their website is at the top of the page)

Their most recent article focuses on the 5 biggest happenings in development in the city over the past 5 years plus some noteworthy honorable mentions.  It’s a nice chance to see the sunnier side of the city that the rest of the media always miraculously seems to miss.

Here’s a snippit

It’s been half a decade since Model D committed to documenting the big (Westin Book Cadillac Hotel) and the small (Mudgie’s outdoor seating, which we wrote up just last week) in Detroit development each and every week.

Rather than think of it as a pain in the butt, I like to consider my job as development news editor as an excuse to exercise my natural curiosity about my city. “What’s going on over there? Wait! Stop for a second!” you might hear me exclaim if you were ever so unfortunate as to be riding a bike with me. [Eds. Note: Really, Kelli? It’s not a pain in the butt?] It’s also a chance to share with our readers all the stuff happening in Detroit. And there is a lot, even in these darkest of economic straits…
